Using structure — ADD Tip o the day 185

Structure includes having a routine, or schedule, or guidelines, or requirements.  If we have ADD or ADHD, we do better with structure.  This can include getting up and going to bed at about the same time each day (with reasonable flexibility), three meals a day at about the same time, certain things I do on certain days, my schedule for seeing patients.  The to do lists are also an aspect of structure, and even more so if I prioritize the things on them.

Structure means that things are organized, and that I have fewer decisions to make, and that much of the time I kind of know where I am in time and have an idea of what the day will look like.  It makes things less confusing and less stressful, and that is good for us ADDers.

  10. great post…structure is incredibly helpful…i remain stuck immersed in the process of everything so following through with something as mundane as structure is a never ending internal battle…i do make my bed every day …no matter what….so nice to have one “organized area” in my life.

    • thank you for the comment!
i bet you brush your teeth too so that would be another area.
most people I think just take the structure of their life for granted, but we ADD ers need to pay attention to it and make use of it.
and an added benefit is if you feel you’ve accomplished something once the bed is made.

It sure helps me to remember that structure is key for both productivity and avoiding the existential soup to which I’m prone towards indulging.
