The Little Calendar — ADD Trip o the Day 329

another strategy for ADD or ADHD –

Do you ever feel stuck or overwhelmed or just have a bunch of things to do and can’t figure out how to get started?  Welcome to the club.

I don’t use this often but it helps in those times: I make a small calendar of a week or ten days (using the back of an envelope).  Take the list of things that need to be done soon and put one in the box for each day.  If the tasks are bigger than a day’s work, I break them down into smaller steps and put a step in each day.  Each day’s task should be small enough that it won’t take too much time.  Then it’s fairly easy to get the one day’s work done and by the end of the calendar they’re all done.

When I finish one, there may be time left to do something else, either something on the calendar for another day or not.  I can always revise the calendar.  But each day I get the thing for that day done, which is a great feeling, builds morale and momentum.  Your critic may tell you that you’re not doing enough, but you can see the progress you’re making and by the end of those days you will have done the things you needed to.

I’m not sure why I don’t do this more often; maybe I just don’t need to that often because the list of five works pretty well.  The trick is to make each day’s task pretty small and easy, so it’s easy to start on it and easy to finish.

  2. Good ideas! I find that since I’m unemployed I have so much time on my hands, but yet I don’t accomplish much. I have a long list of small projects I need to do around the house but have yet to do any of them. I might try this to get started. Thanks!
