“Science Says —” ADHD Tip O the Day 933

“Science says–.”

What does that even mean?

That means that there have been more than one or two studies supporting this hypothesis and the original findings have been replicated by other scientists in other places. The studies have been reviewed by experts in the field who agree that the studies were well designed and the results valid.  Then the  results have been published in reputable scientific journals.  Thus the findings are substantiated by data and evidence and the majority of scientists agree with the findings.

So, “Science says —.”

 Notes O the Day:

  1. Most scientists have a PhD in their field and do research.
  2. Many MDs, not nearly the majority, are scientists, and some have a Phd also.
  3. I have done a little research and kind of think of myself a little as a scientist because I think in the scientific method.  I am not a researcher.
  4. There are some people without this education or experience  who believe that their opinions are more valid than those of the scientists.
  5. There is a cultural move towards anti science, anti intellectualism, anti experts, and  anti “elitism.”  This is often accompanied by bitterness and conspiracy theories and frequently by a sense of superiority.
  6. Science says that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder. This is supported by brain imaging and other studies, ie by data and evidence.
  7. Science is not perfect.  That’s a topic for another post.

Strategies:

  1. If someone voices an opinion on something, see if they have evidence or data or a reliable source to base it on.
  2. It is rarely worth the time or effort to try to change someone’s mind about something.
  3. It is best to minimize time around toxic people.

“Science says” really isn’t about science like you illustrate. Scientific studies have found, demonstrated or concluded. It’s always up for investigation and there is always uncertainty.

That doesn’t justify ignorance or dickhead behavior.

This subject was well addressed in your post.

    Thanks again.

Excellent comment. Yes, not many things are proven 100%, although often 99.99. And many scientific “facts“ are open to revision by further research. Just look at the recommendations about food.
But I doubt if we will ever discard the existence of gravity, or revise the formula for its effect (at least in the macro world), but our understanding of what it actually is and its cause may undergo further evolution.
Which leads to another thought. There is misunderstanding of the idea of a scientific “theory,” like the theory of evolution-“It’s just a theory.” Evolution is a demonstrable fact; fairly easy to observe in fruit flies for example. Open for debate is the theory that evolution is the process by which humans came to be, although it is rarely doubted by people who Understand evolution and know the data.
      Thank you for your contribution
      Best wishes

.Good post on the issue of the meaning of”science says”. With all of the conspiracy theories and assaults on our democracy-I wonder what the new normal will be after the Trump nightmare as president ends. Now that the lawsuits have failed and the states are certifying the election-the new battlefield is when both houses of Congress affirm the votes in each state. Supposedly individual members can object to a state’s tally. Stay tuned for the next episode of the drama. I am in favor of appointing competent minority people to high office-but I believe that Biden is pushing the limits. It is difficult to appeal to people who have lost jobs to immigrants and hate affirmative action. During the pandemic we watch movies and recently viewed “American dream”. It is about a strike by American high school graduates who worked at a Hormel plant around 1980. The co offered $10.50 and hour which was refused and then sold the plant to a new owner who paid $5 and now 40 years later all employees are Mexican. There something unsettling to me in this story. We continue to do as well as can be expected-I feel like we are crawling to the vaccine. We spend some time in ct. with Arielle and crew-I am especially close to our grandson-try to push the narrative of the importance of education-making some progress. The grand saga of the heart device company is nearing a climax. We have been testing the new battery-saw per the fda-for 10 months of the year required and no failures. When we get approval expect the big money to come in from venture capital firms. The number of vc firms in the niche space is amazing-430. This is an indication of the strength of the American economy. We have an entire industry which finances startups where the banks cannot go. When the new money comes in-I will be out of the picture. I don’t know if I can latch on to a new narrative. When is the Alma book coming.
