“You Don’t Listen to Me!” — ADHD Tip O the Day 816

Have you ever heard that?

Miscommunication is a standard part of normal human life. So is the frustration with it.

But who ever said that ADHD is normal human life?  So we have a lot more of it.

Feeling not listened to is very painful.

“You don’t listen to me!”

There are several possible explanations:

  1. You had a very clear idea in your head and thought that your words had clearly conveyed it to me, but I didn’t get the idea the way you were thinking it.  This is life.
  2. I wasn’t listening to you. I was stressed and/or had so many ideas going at once that your message just got lost in the shuffle.
  3. I was listening to you. I heard you.  But then I got distracted and/or forgot it. Sorry.

Strategies:

1. Write it down.

2.Try not to take the mistake or the frustration personally. Its life.

3. Love.

About doug with ADHD

I am a psychiatric physician. I learned I have ADHD at age 64, and then wrote two ADHD books for adults, focusing on strategies for making your life better. I just published my first novel, Alma Means Soul. Your Life Can Be Better; strategies for adults with ADD/ADHD available at amazon.com, or smashwords.com (for e books) Living Daily With Adult ADD or ADHD: 365 Tips O the Day ( e-book). This is one tip at a time, one page at a time, at your own pace. It's meant to last a year. As a child, I was a bully. Then there was a transformation. Now I am committed to helping people instead abusing them. The Bully was published in January, 2016. It's in print or e book, on Amazon.

    Hi Doug
I actually don’t get accused of not listening (I’m usually the one doing that) because I have a relatively good grip on realizing when I dozed off. I zone back in and try to figure out where the conversation is at, and when it’s impossible, I ask something like “I’m sorry, I got lost… this is still the guy who did xyz?”
When I told my best friend that I have ADHD (she’s known me since the tenderest childhood), she told me “The first thing that springs to mind is us talking in the train, at the café or wherever; and you’re looking at me the whole time like you’re following everything I say, and suddenly you go ‘I’m sorry, I zoned out back there. What were you saying again?’.” LOL
I have a stupidly good hearing memory. When I’m really focused on what people are saying. :p

    • ram – you have a handle on it. I can “listen” – can repeat it back word for word, but wasn’t hearing. the words were available on the surface of my brain but hadnt gone any further.
as always, thank you for your comment
