Remedies for ADHD. Or Misinformation? — ADHD Tip O the Day 764

ADHD Remedies and Solutions to ADHD

I just found a post that’s an interesting follow up to the last two posts about treatment without medication. It’s an example of unsubstantiated claims and misrepresentations.

Guy almost says that he is curing ADHD, but maybe not quite.  “Remedies” ? And I was unaware that doctors were getting commissions from “Big Pharma.” Many spinnings and erroneous implications.

Only at the very bottom does he reveal that he is not “just” selling herbs.

But:

I like some of his points:  Herbals can also have side effects and need to be researched carefully.   Children should have a good evaluation and diagnosis before medication is considered.  Children need more exercise than most are getting and ADHD kids shouldn’t be made to “sit still.”  And ADHD has no simple explanation and no simple solution. (although is he offering one?)

Question O the Day: I wrote recently of a relative who seems to benefit from all the “naturals” he’s taking.  Have you seen significant benefits for your ADHD from diet or herbs?

    HI Doug,
    I think that the comment about exercise deprivation in children is important.
    Cognition is, essentially, the internalisation of, and the learning to plan for, movement.
    Movement occupies about 90% of brain activity.

    Equally it seems that the evidence is showing that societies whose schooling programs ensure more exercise in early primary school have much lower rates of ADHD.

    • mind- i’m in favor of bringing back PE, art, and music classes, especially if they could be done well. they all affect brain functioning and development. and exercise and fidgeting clearly help ADHD kids function better. I wasn’t aware of the studies you mentioned – sounds interesting.

  2. As I have said MANY times over my past 25+ years in the field:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Diets that exacerbate symptoms that are changed to eliminate items (or add missing ones) can *appear* to “cure” or “treat” ADD. It doesn’t make substances causative agents, nor will removing them change anything beyond an amelioration of symptoms *in SOME cases*.
    The Defined Diet approach to ADD treatment has been scientifically studied and found wanting many times – including a comprehensive study conducted years ago by the World Health Organization.
    BUT, we cannot ignore placebo effects either. As one of my favorite ADD docs said to me in a conversation around this topic, years ago, “If people find that eating peanut butter sandwiches improves their ADD, my professional advice is to eat peanut butter sandwiches.” He also added something along the lines of “the proof is in the pudding.”
    Another great post, Doug. Loved the memes.
