Alternatives to ADHD Medicines, part 2 —ADD Tip O the Day 594

There are lots of alternatives to cover, and recent studies show that the supplements don’t contain what they claim.  What are you supposed do to?

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) for more than ADD ADHD

It helps ADD ADHD some. I take it for general health and recommend it to everyone. The ratio needs to be correct, 4 EPA to 3 DHA. Much that is sold is useless.

Research Verified (brand name) Premium Omega-3

Second choice:Life Extension Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA

Third choice: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega

Caffeine

I was addicted to caffeine before I knew I had ADD ADHD.  Studies show it can help some but may need excessive doses and thus  side effect problems – I sure did.

Food additives and coloring:

For children on high intake of food additives, decreasing them may help some – that has surprised me.

Note: I never claimed that this  survey was going to be well organized, but I hope to cover all aspects.

    Hi Doug
    I work as a pastry chef, and here in Germany I have noticed the warning “Attention: May influence the attention and heighten the activity of children” printed on some food-colorings, but only on some. I was just looking for info and apparently, as shown by a research dating back to 2007, the food colorings containing azo compounds are not related to hyperactivity as a snyndrome (i.e. they’re not the cause), but a significant effect on activity could be measured in children. I’m still trying to find proof for this research on 2007.

        this effect was seen in random children, not ADD ADHD, and was not consistent.
        It doesn’t say how much the behavior was affected. It doesn’t address any effects on focus, attention, etc. if the colors, plus the chemical just acted as a stimulant to some of the children, then they would get more active. Would it perhaps be helpful to the ADD ADHD kids?

          Yep, in my over-eagerness, I didn’t mention it, but it’s true. This study was very criticized for not being very scientific and not proving consistent results, but the comitee of the EU still passed a law in 2010, that these food coloring must have such a warning on the label.
          On a slight sidenote, there’s the idea around that children who eat or drink something sugary after a certain hour will be hyperactive and I heard about a study being made where they gave the children sugar-free drinks and told _the parents_ that the kids had had drinks high in sugar content. The parents then took the children home to the daily routine and were later asked if they had noticed a difference in behaviour. Most parents claimed that the kids were bouncing off the walls, way more active than usual, hahaha… Sadly, I haven’t found _this_ report online yet. It sure would be interesting too.
