New report on stimulants for children with ADD ADHD
It depends on how you spin it :
The headline:
Increased risk of cardiovascular events in children on stimulants – Wow! Bad!
Makes a sensational headline.
111 children out of 714,258 had events. The events were dose-related. It doesn’t mention deaths; that might suggest there were none. I don’t know.
That’s .01554 % if my calculations are correct.
I would like to see a study of the risks of water, or carrots ( I’m sure some children have choked on carrots), or exercise.

Ritalin is supposedly safer than aspirin – but nobody is out there sensationalizing that fact. In fact, older Americans are told every day, to take aspirin to prevent death from heart attacks. The fear machine is offensive and harmful.

Here’s one link that “rights” some wrongs about stimulants and it does make reference to aspirin and really any drug having side effects…lots of great points in here: http://www.childmind.org/en/posts/articles/2012-1-30-adhd-righting-record-stimulant-medications
I realized that the aspirin quote I’m referring to was a Hallowell quote. I actually am not clear on his sources for the comparison so I don’t want to link to it, but if you want to dig about, that’s where to start 😉

Katy- thank you! That is a great post you pointed me to. We use it on the blog. good information. Do you think these people are deliberately misleading, have some hidden agenda, or are just trying to be sensational to sell more newspapers? It is bewildering.
Thank you for the very helpful comments.
