How To Study Part 3 — ADD Tip o the Day 443

Whether you have ADD or ADHD or not, there are two very effective scientific principles for studying – self testing and using the forgetting curve.

Studies have shown that the most effective way to learn is by testing – test yourself  before you know the material and keep testing as you go.

(First, look at the book or your notes.  See if there are headings,  sidebars, summaries, or questions at the end of the chapter.  Get a sense of what you are about to learn.)

Read one page, close the book, and jot down on scratch paper the three main ideas on that page.  If you can’t, then go over it again.  Do this page by page til you finish the chapter, then try to  write down the main ideas for the whole chapter.  If you can’t, then look at your jot downs and then try again.

Bonus Tip 1. in your spare time, while driving, waiting in line, or whatever, go over the outline or list in your mind.  If you can’t, go back again.

Bonus Tip 2.  There are some wonderful free iPhone flash card programs with cards for lots of topics.  I would tell you my favorites but I don’t have my iPhone with me right now.

Bunus Tip 3. It is better not to to send your iPhone thru the washing machine.
