Slips and Failures — ADD Tip o the Day 372

With ADD or ADHD we are plagued by slips and failures.  But AA teaches that slips are to be expected and we need to have a plan for them to help us just get back on the track.

I was given the gift of the strategy of hanging my car keys on the gas tank door so I won’t drive off with the gas hose anymore.  So I made that a rule, and it has become a habit.  I do it every time I get gas.  Except the last time.  I started to drive off but remembered to check in the mirror that the hose wasn’t still in the tank, and then realized I had not put the keys on the cap.  Arrgggghh!

When we identify the problem, make a strategy and then make a rule, we will have some slips while we’re making the rule into a habit.  We have to understand that and just keep plugging away; the habit will come.  But even after, we may still have the occasional slip.   That’s just real life.

So the trick is- Don’t call myself stupid or other names.  Don’t decide that the strategy doesn’t work and just give it up.  Don’t even feel bad about it; just be grateful that I didn’t drive off with the hose this time and be determined to keep working on the strategy.  Painfully have to admit that I am only human after all.

  1. Thanks for letting me know you wrote this. I copied your link up – INTO the article itself (see Ping above?)

btw- we are contemporaries (I was dx’d at 38, which was bad enough!). I am AMAZED at how you managed to keep body, brain and soul together for so long without understanding how your brain was “wired.” My hat’s off!
