Hard days — ADD Tip o the day 295

Some days are hard.  I  feel overloaded, not at my best, disorganized, and I can’t get started.  That’s all part of ADD or ADHD, and we need strategies.

1.  if I have more than 5 things on my list of 5 (red card) – and I confess, sometimes I do (a mistake), then I will number them, 1-5, or even 1-3.

2. If that doesn’t do it, I will make a list of one.  Take an envelope and write one task on it, and put it in the middle of my desk.

3.  If that doesn’t do it, then I will give up.  Sometimes giving up is a good strategy.  So I just pray to make it through the day, not trying to accomplish anything else.  And I will use self talk- “Just make it thru the day.”  – “One foot in front of the other.”  – “You can only do what you can do.”

Sometimes things go pretty well then.

Some days are just like that.

I am a psychiatric physician. I learned I have ADHD at age 64, and then wrote four ADHD books for adults, focusing on strategies for making your life better. “Never, Never, Never give up: Instead, just say “I’m Moving On” or “I’mTaking the Day Off”
UNLESS you were taught never to say “i give up”. In that case say”I give up” three times,
followed by a spinning pirouete, & leave the room while saying “I’m Moving On” or “I’m
Taking the Day Off”. VICTORY IS YOURS!!

    • love it! – i’m moving on or i’m taking the day off – sounds great. especially with the pirouete!
however- when i went out for the 8th grade basketball team, i had no experience, coordination, depth perception, skill or talent. the coach didnt like me, the 7th graders picked on me, and the only uniform they had for me was faded and ragged. I never got into a game (thank God) and was miserable, but i stuck it out! Yea!! no, not yea – dumb. so tho it may be un american (or un british) i have become a fan of knowing when to quit.
      thank you for the comment

    Hi Doug,
A friend of mine who is a fiddler once told me he gets less nervous the more people he plays in front of because if he just makes one person in the audience happy, he has done his job and the more people, the better the odds. When you have a bad day, you can always remember that you have written your book and that it has helped people to have good days. I’m sure we all have something we have contributed, even a smile. If we can remember one of those things on our bad days, maybe it will help us through. Thank you for your work.
    Scott
