“Just a behavioral problem —-” ADD tip of the day 191

Arrrrgh!!!   That drives me right up the wall.  Research show differences in the brains of those of us with ADD or ADHD.  The patterns of problems that we have are quite consistent and don’t match those of people with “just behavioral problems”, or “just laziness”, or “just irresponsibility”.  Yes, there is some overlap of behaviors, but the overall picture and most of the details are different.

I am also not a fan of “He’s just doing that for attention.”  I always said, “Well, if he has to go to that extreme to get attention there must be something wrong.”

Some people think we are just using ADD or ADHD as an excuse, and in fact, there is a real danger of us doing that on occasion, but these conditions are real, and cause us, and those we are involved with, real problems.  And No! –  trying harder does not help.

About doug with ADHD

I am a psychiatric physician. I learned I have ADHD at age 64, and then wrote two ADHD books for adults, focusing on strategies for making your life better. I just published my first novel, Alma Means Soul. Your Life Can Be Better; strategies for adults with ADD/ADHD available at amazon.com, or smashwords.com (for e books) Living Daily With Adult ADD or ADHD: 365 Tips O the Day ( e-book). This is one tip at a time, one page at a time, at your own pace. It's meant to last a year. As a child, I was a bully. Then there was a transformation. Now I am committed to helping people instead abusing them. The Bully was published in January, 2016. It's in print or e book, on Amazon.
