A young man called for help today, he was “overwhelmed”. He had so many things he needed to do and he just couldn’t get started. He was paralyzed.
I didn’t point out to him that “overwhelmed” is simply a state of mind, not a reality. He wasn’t ready to hear that. What he needed was the solution.
The key is to shift from thinking about “all those things I have to do” over to a focus on the one small thing I need to do right now.
I’ll repeat the strategy for that next time. Like a lot of the ways of coping with ADD or ADHD-guess what?! – it involves lists.
