Why I don’t get it done — ADD Tip o the day 128

Why do I keep doing what I want to do instead of what I need to do?  I do the easy enjoyable fun things while the things I need to do pile up over my head.  The more they pile up, the more difficult and unpleasant they seem and the harder it is to get started on them.

There are many reasons.  The book is about strategies for coping with ADD or ADHD and this problem is addressed pretty fully.  One of the best strategies for dealing with it is to make a list of one, the one thing I need to do that I am going to focus on.  Then I use another great strategy, and break the task into small steps.  Then I pick one of those and that is my new list of one.  Do the one step and forget about the rest until it is done.  Then I can go on to the next step.  Til I get the task done.
