Vulnerable — ADD tip o the day 104

“steaming” is a poker term.  When you got a really good hand, and you played it perfectly, and then you lost a big pot because some bozo  made an incredibly lucky draw and beat you, you are likely to be “steaming’, which means you are frustrated, upset, and determined to get it back all at once on the very next hand.  At that point, you are very vulnerable.

We who are coping with ADD or ADHD get vulnerable too, meaning there are times when our ADD symptoms get worse, when we are more likely to be impulsive, inappropriate, and to  mess up.  This could be when we are tired, or stressed, feeling overloaded or overwhelmed.  There are strategies for coping with this:

1. use strategies to avoid getting into the vulnerable state in the first place

2.  be aware of this phenomenon and recognize when you are in a vulnerable state

3.  take a break (this is what the poker player needs to do)

4.  then deal with whatever the source of the tiredness or overwhelmed or etc. is before trying to go on with other things (you may just need a nap)

doug                                   draft 18 of the book is going a little more like I expected 17 to be, a little polishing here and there, no major rewriting or reorganizing.  It doesn’t look too bad.  Whew!

About doug with ADHD

I am a psychiatric physician. I learned I have ADHD at age 64, and then wrote two ADHD books for adults, focusing on strategies for making your life better. I just published my first novel, Alma Means Soul. Your Life Can Be Better; strategies for adults with ADD/ADHD available at amazon.com, or smashwords.com (for e books) Living Daily With Adult ADD or ADHD: 365 Tips O the Day ( e-book). This is one tip at a time, one page at a time, at your own pace. It's meant to last a year. As a child, I was a bully. Then there was a transformation. Now I am committed to helping people instead abusing them. The Bully was published in January, 2016. It's in print or e book, on Amazon.
