Yesterday I was feeling overloaded. that is a unpleasant feeling and, the feeling makes it harder to get things done, so then I feel more overloaded. But that’s exactly what it is, a feeling, a state of mind, a perception, not a reality or a fact. I know that, and I have good strategies for dealing with the feeling.
So I used my best strategy. I got out my yellow legal bad and wrote down all the things I needed to do. Then I ranked then by importance. Then I picked the first one and broke it into smaller steps and started on the first small step. That is a great strategy, a way to cope when my ADD gets me feeling overloaded.
It didn’t work. I still felt overloaded.
So I got another yellow pad and drew a ten days calendar on it. Then i filled in the things I needed to do, the various appointments and obligations and then the things from the to do list, fitting them into the appropriate calander square for the day when I might plan or expect to do it. I ran out of squares before I ran out of to do’s.
The fact is, I was overloaded! But it also a fact that the overloaded was a perception and not a fact. I was trying to get more done than was reasonably possible. I had to readjust priorities and expectations and plans. I had to spread that to do list out over more than ten days. OK, that worked, don’t feel overloaded anymore. And right now I am doing the blog, which is one of things left on the list of five things that I had written down for today. And only have one more left. Might not get to it today. I’m not overloaded.
May have to add this episode to the book – another strategy you can use to Make Your Life Better.
