Wow, Doug. Did you put a bug in my mind so you could read my thoughts?! I have a bunch of these "errors of thinking".

I do this one regularly: Emotional reasoning – If you start feeling anxious, you might reason that something bad is about to happen… or else you wouldn’t be anxious. Instead, you might be feeling anxious simply because you were startled a few moments ago.

It drives me crazy when I do it. I try to talk myself out of it and sometimes I can and sometimes I can't.

I feel a lot better knowing I'm not the only one with faulty thinking and realize that I probably should work on some of these.

Now stay out of my mind!!! :)

I have a terrible time with small tasks. Unless I write them down, they tend not to ever get done. My husband, who doesn't have ADD, is a master at getting small and big things done. I've tried to watch and learn but I just can't do what he does. I need big things AND small things on my to-do list in order to get anything done. Somehow, when everything is written down, I am much more organized in my thoughts. I sometimes get three or four things done without even looking at the list because they all go together in some way. For example, I went downstairs to switch the laundry and when I came up and passed the kitty litter, I went ahead and changed it because I knew it was on the list. Then I grabbed the windex from the cleaning caddy near the kitty litter and cleaned off the window in the family room. Three tasks in a row. But if they hadn't been written down, I wouldn't have done any of them.

Speaking of getting distracted, we were having company for dinner Friday night so I went into the office to get the extra chair. Between the office and the dining room, I got distracted with something and forgot about the chair. About 10 minutes later, I saw the chair sitting in the middle of the kitchen. Oops. Guess I should have followed your advice and not allowed myself to interrupt that small task. Oh boy - I know exactly what you're talking about.

ken-
yeah, sounds like you're doing fine, if you're not sleepy during the day. we are all different, with different needs and different patterns. the general advice is to skip the hours of thrashing and just get up, there's little worse than lying in bed and TRYING TO GO TO SLEEP.
as always, thank you for commenting and best wishes

I have no idea! I tend to be a night person whereas she is a morning person and I usually work or read until I'm dropping before I go to bed. If I get too many nights of sleeping more than 7 hours I find I get insomnia and have to get up at 3 in the morning to work after hours of thrashing around and failing to sleep. I'm actually best on around 6 hours these days going to bed after 1 a.m. and getting up at 7. My wife finds this bizarre behaviour and is convinced I 'never learned how to sleep'. For me, it's perfectly normal!
